Good Eats

You may find this weird, but I just love Alton Brown. Have you watched his shows 'Good Eats'? If you haven't, do catch it on Food Network. It's not like any other cooking shows. You learn about the history, chemistry and technology of food.  He makes cooking interesting, fun and educational.  I have 30 episodes of Alton Brown recorded and I plan to have a 'Goof Eats' marathon during the weekend once all the assignments are completed. YEAH!!! :)

Mauritian Princess

For those who know I'm from Mauritius, I would like to introduce you to the Mauritian cuisine.  Mauritian cuisine, just like Singapore cuisine, is a blend of many types of cuisines such Creole, European, Indian and Chinese. One of the favourites of all Mauritians is the dhal puri, where the dhal is blended with the flour which gives it a very soft texture and a very flavourful. Apparently dhal puri can only be found in Mauritius and Papua New Guinea. I didn't know that until two years ago when I met someone from there. 

Mauritian cuisine is not as spicy hot as Singaporean food but it is no less flavourful.  We love our tomato and loads of herbs in all our dishes.  A Mauritian will not have a meal without pulses.  My personal favourite is black lentils. I really miss the food!! I can't wait to go back and taste Mum's and Dad's cooking (Dad's cooking is certainly the best, but can't tell Mum that).

Recycle your old clothes

Instead of throwing away old clothes or bags, why not recycle them and make a totally new product that's new and unique! I think after all those textile classes, I might be an expert in bag making. The video I've included just shows how you might use those old clothes to make a great bag. So don't forget:

My introduction to Home Economics

Home economics? What am I supposed to be teaching in Home Ec? I studied food science and technology in university and I didn't how to cook a proper dish or sew.

Those were my first thoughts when I received that letter from MOE which said I would be teaching Home Ec to secondary school kids. I had never been in a home economics class in my life. Even though I was in an all-girls' school, we did not have the opportunity to learn the subject. Why? Well because then, there were not enough home economics teachers to teach in all the schools. 

After being in the corporate world for 6 years, I got tired of that boring life and I decided to accept this new challenge that came to me. I started reading about the history and purpose of studying the subject. I got very excited about it and I knew this was going to be the start of a wonderful new career. 

But one thing that I did not expect was seeing boys in aprons in my class and many were actually eager to learn! During the 4 months that I was in Queensway Secondary School, I fell in love with teaching and now being in NIE, I want to learn to be the best teacher I can be and share this new found love with all of my students in the future.
